Permitting FAQ

Building permits are essential licenses that grant legal permission to start constructing a building or make changes to an existing one.

Permits enforce codes established by authorities to ensure safe construction practices. These codes, adopted as law by governments, safeguard public health, safety, and welfare. Regardless of the project, code enforcement aims to protect the City of Allentown by setting guidelines that reduce the risks associated with unsafe construction.

Applying for a building permit signals to code officials that you're starting a construction or remodeling project. These officials inspect the project onsite to guarantee that minimum standards are met and appropriate materials are used. This process safeguards your investment in the property—non-compliance with codes could jeopardize your investment in your home or business.

There is a non refundable application fee of $50 for Residential Permits and $100 for Commercial Permits. You can find all associated building fees in the Codified Ordinance
