The Department of Community and Economic Development (CED) plays a comprehensive role in the ongoing revitalization of the City of Allentown. This is realized by providing resources to assist and empower existing residents and businesses to thrive, while simultaneously encouraging new residents and businesses to come and call Allentown home.
CED offers assistance to small businesses, neighborhood groups, non-profits, faith-based organizations, large business, and housing developers alike. CED, through its Bureaus and offices of Business Development, Housing and Federal Grants, Planning and Zoning, Building Standards and Safety, and Health works with all constituents located in the City to determine and assist with any particular need. CED staff is ready and willing to offer hands-on guidance to navigate and understand applications, permits, variances, Boards and Authorities, financial assistance, location needs, and development processes.
Currently, the City of Allentown is experiencing a renaissance. Millions of dollars in new investment and construction is resulting in several new venues downtown, including a hockey and events arena, Class A office space, residential units, and restaurants. The revitalization of Allentown is stimulated by special tax legislation called the Neighborhood Improvement Zone.
In addition to the new downtown development, the City has prioritized improving the neighborhoods surrounding downtown. The City developed the Upside Allentown strategy, which is a revitalization plan for the Center City neighborhoods. Many partners are assisting with raising funds to implement this plan.
The Department is eager to support your community and economic development needs. Please contact us at 610-437-7610 and we will direct you to the best resource to support you and your success in the City of Allentown.
