The City of Allentown is announcing the start of lane restrictions and closures in the area of 7th and Hamilton Streets beginning Monday, October 20, 2025, as part of the Center Square Redesign Project. This initial phase of work involves waterline upgrades necessary to support the broader infrastructure improvements in Center Square.

 

The Lehigh County Authority will be performing the waterline replacement work in five phases over the next several weeks. The schedule is as follows:

• October 20–22: Lane restrictions only
• October 23–31: No left turn onto Hamilton Street while traveling south on 7th Street
• October 31 - November 4: No work will be done due to the Halloween Parade and Election day. No restrictions or closures during this time
• November 5-6: Lane restrictions only
• November 6–7: No right turn onto 7th Street while traveling east on Hamilton Street
• November 7-14: Lane restrictions only

E Allen Street, between N Fenwick to N Filbert St, will be closed until 3:30pm due to a sinkhole repair.

Lehigh County Authority has hired Joao & Bradley Construction Company Inc to replace large valves for the water line along MLK Dr between South Saint Elmo Street and Lehigh Parkway East. 

Attached is the detour map for the road closure.

The Closure will be a hard closure with “Road Closed” barricades along MLK Dr at South Saint Elmo St and Lehigh Parkway East for the time and dates listed below.  “Road Closed ahead local traffic only” signs will be placed at the intersection of MLK Dr and S 24th St to the west and MLK DR and 15th St to the east. The preferred detour is S 24th St to Hamilton St to 15th St when looking to travel East on MLK Dr and the opposite when traveling West. 

•            Monday November 10:                 7am to 3 pm detour

•            Tuesday November 11:                7am to 3pm detour

•            Wednesday November 12:         7am to 3pm detour

•            Thursday November 13:              7am to 12am detour (24/7 detour begins)

•            Friday November 14:                    12am to 12am detour (24/7 detour continues)

o            24/7 hour detour will extend into the weekend if work is not completed by EOD Friday

•            Monday November 17:                 12am to 3pm (24/7 detour ends)

•            Tuesday November 18:                7am to 3pm detour

 

Advanced notice message boards will go into effect Monday November 3rd, 2025. 

All closures and detours are subject to change

Starting Monday November 17th there will be lame restrictions on the Hamilton Street Bridge for Enviro-Air Technologies, on behalf of UGI, to remove an old gas line from the bottom of the bridge. Lane closures will be from 8:00am to 3:00pm on the following dates;

• Monday 11/17/25 to Friday 11/21/25
• Monday 11/24/25 and Tuesday 11/25/25
• Monday 12/1/25 to Wednesday 12/3/25
